Sixteen year old Joe Warner’s neighborhood is swarming with parasitic Bursting Wasps, which send each victim into a coma before bursting out through their skin and killing them. When his dad is infected, Joe and his family struggle to raise enough money for the cure: a dose of Raloxone, which at $50,000 per dose is far out of reach. Then Joe sees an opportunity to make big money: by going up against kids from the rich side of town in a citywide goobotics competition. Desperate to win, Joe tricks Sarita Garland, a rich but traumatized girl, into loaning her batch of precious neurogoop–her hypnotic pet Pudsy–to serve as the brain in his fighting goobot. Joe knows he will never return Pudsy to Sarita because all fighting goobots are destroyed after the competition for safety. As the final battle rages, Joe hesitates, realizing that he holds Sarita’s wellbeing in his hands, and that the prize money would come with the heavy sinfulness of betraying her trust.
